Saturday Wandering: Museum of the City of New York

For a Brooklyn girl, Museum Mile is a fairly major road trip (technically, subway trip), just as long as the trip to Flushing a couple weeks ago but all underground.

Today is beautiful but cold, a perfect day to finally visit the Museum of the City of New York – something I’ve been wanting to do since I began my graduate research into immigrants in New York several years ago (even more daunting than it sounds). The museum has great original photographs by Jacob Riis, the famed chronicler of Lower East Side tenement life in the late 19th century. There is also a special exhibit going on right now (through June 8, 2010)of Charles Addams’ drawings and cartoons which should not be missed – especially by anyone who grew up watching the Addams Family.

Two hours was not enough time to really get into the collection, so I will definitely make an effort to return soon (again and again).

The second half of my Museum Mile outing is to dinner at the new restaurant at the GuggenheimWright. Details on that coming soon!
